SmartCook Energy is a venture-backed technology and  research company that  leverages existing downstream oil
infrastructure to deliver a proven and profitable new liquid cooking fuel in Africa’s largest cities, enabling the
conversion of part of the $10-15 billion charcoal and kerosene market to a sustainable modern fuel.

SmartCook is in the process of technology and market development with offices in Nairobi and Kampala building
both hardware & software technologies to enable distribution and use of  the cheaper, cleaner, convenient and more
sustainable fuel.

Systems & Field Engineer:

SmartCook has a growing technology development team based in Nairobi with partners in India, Europe and the US.
Our methodology is based on an agile, iterative approach that allows us to build, test, deploy and learn from the
insights gained at each step & build them into the next iteration.  A considerable amount of hardware and software
functionality has been developed & successfully deployed in the field in   Nairobi and Kampala.

Our technology development team is based in Nairobi, but will need to expand to other locations in order to support
pilot & test deployments.  In these locations we require systems & field engineers with the following skillset &
attributes:

General skills
● Ability to work autonomously and think on your feet
● Excellent observational skills and a forward thinking / planning attitude
● Excellent communication skills
● Interest in the customer experience and user journey of products
● Keen eye for safety

Specific engineering skills:
● Background / training in electronics
● At ease with simple electronics & systems debugging
● Software development skills would be useful, in particular embedded systems (C / Arduino) & Android app
development
● Ability to support remote problem­shooting & investigate issues in a systematic way.

Position timeframe requirements:
● Role to start late December 2015  / early January 2016
● Full time

Location:
● Kampala.
● Occasional travel to Nairobi or within East Africa may be required.

World Photography Competition

The 2016 Sony World Photography Awards, the world’s largest photography competition organized by the World Photography Organisation, are open for entries.

Now in its ninth year, the awards are an authoritative voice in the photographic world. Each year they attract both emerging talent and established artists and present the world’s best contemporary photography from the last 12 months.

The awards’ prizes include: the latest Sony digital imaging equipment; inclusion in the Sony World Photography Awards exhibition at Somerset House, London; inclusion in the 2016 awards’ book and $30,000 (USD) for the overall winners.

New for 2016, the 14 Professional categories are now divided into two distinct genres – Art and Documentary. Both genres also include new category additions, with Art presenting the new Staged and Candid categories and Documentary now including Daily Life and Environment.

Photographers of all abilities are invited to submit work to any of the awards’ five competitions:

Data Supervisor (3 Positions)

PATH  a  Washington  non-profit  corporation  is  partnering  with  Makerere  University School of Public Health (MakSPH) in Uganda to implement a prospective study to evaluate the effectiveness of Sayana Press in Uganda after a 4 year pilot phase that was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation.  This  evaluation  will  build  the  evidence  base  for  global  decision- making about whether and how to include Sayana Press in family planning programs in the future and will also inform scale up on Sayana Press in Uganda. The evaluation will include use of tablets to administer structure face to face interview within a health facility.

MakSPH  therefore  seeks  to  hire  suitable  candidates  for  the  positions  of  Dat a supervisor  who will be based in three regions (Central, Eastern and Northern) supervising data collection in  6 districts of B u s i a ,  M a y u g e , Mubende, Kayunga, Gulu  and  Oyam.   The   successful   candidates   will  be  reporting  to  the  Project Coordinator/ Co-Principal Inverstigator.

Position description

The overall duty of the data supervisor will be to ensure that field research assistants follow the study operating procedure in data collection.  Specifically data supervisors will be required to perform the following task;

  • Work closely  with  resident  Village  health  team  members   and  research assistants
  • Receive electronic data from research assistants
  • Review electronic data and then discuss with the relevant research assistants in case of some data queries.
  • Receives data queries from the study coordinator and  handle them together with the respected research assistants
  • Supervises field  data  collection  and  management  activities  following  the evaluation protocol including consent process and confidentiality requirements.
  • Uploads all the data from that specific region.
  • Secure storage of data according to study protocol procedures
  • Maintains confidentiality and security of data
  • Keep the tablet safe and secure
  • Reports to the study coordinator  any issues that may affect the study
  • Provides t h e  c o o r d i n a t o r       with d a i l y  u p d a t e s  i n c l u d i n g  c l i e n t recruited,  interviews  completed,  and any other  important  information  about assigned clients from that region.
  • Participate on study team meetings throughout the study period.
  • Maybe asked in data collection as needed
  • Execute any other duties assigned by the coordinator and the study investigators

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s  degree   in   Humanities,    public   health,   Nursing,   statistics, information technology and any other related discipline

Other requirements

  • Prior knowledge in data collection and management
  • MUST possess a personal laptop computer
  • Proficiency (both spoken and written) in English.
  • Knowledgeable about   common local languages spoken in that region.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills and ability to follow study specific procedures and guidelines reliably.
  • Ability to spend an extended period of time in rural areas and away from home
  • Willing to reside in the region  for the entire study period
  • Willing to make regular trips to health facilities in the survey districts
  • Ability  to    work    under    stringent    deadlines    and    independently    with minimal supervision

Rakai Health Sciences Program has received funding from Fogarty International to support students for
Masters of Public Health at Makerere University Kampala. The scholarship will cover full time (FT) or
Distance education (DE) training, tuition fees, stipend, minimal travel and minimal supplies.
Eligibility:
 Should have admission at Makerere University.
 Willing to do thesis/dissertation on Medical Male Circumcision.
 Experience with Medical Male Circumcision programs will be an added advantage.
